Learn By Doing

ACCESS BladeRunners is a provincial employment-based program provided through NYSA and funded by the Government of British Columbia. The program gives young people the tools, certificates, confidence and opportunity to reach their fullest working potential.

BladeRunners has been designed for youth aged 16 to 30 who have encountered barriers or challenges in finding and/or keeping employment. NYSA staff work alongside participants to encourage, empower and support them through this four-week, paid program.

Historically, BladeRunners trained in two main employment fields – Construction and Customer Service. New programs are being tested including Culinary Arts and Security Guard training. Based on which program is running, participants are able to receive various certifications such as Occupational First Aid Level 1, Serving It Right, WHIMIS, FOODSAFE, Ladder Safety, Asbestos and Abatement and/or Fall Protection.

Beyond the Books

  • Four-week Provincial employment-based paid program;
  • On the job experience is an integral part of the training;
  • The program aims to give youth the tools, certificates, confidence and opportunity to reach their full career potential;
  • As a participant, individuals become eligible for financial assistance for transportation, work gear and other equipment required for their new job.

Group 2: Intake: before June 14 / Program Run Date: July 02 to July 26, 2024.
Group 3: Application deadline: July 15 / Program Run Date: August 06 to August 30, 2024.
Group 4: Application deadline: August 19 / Program Run Date: September 09 to October 04, 2024.

Serving It Right

Serving It Right is British Columbia’s responsible liquor sales and service program for industry workers, that everyone involved in the sale and service of liquor has to take. It is designed to help make sure that the service and sale of liquor is done according to the law and in a way that keeps customers, guests and others safe from alcohol-related harms.

Industrial First Aid

This hands-on and interactive one-day Level 1 course teaches workers how to deal with the most common occupational first-aid emergencies. At the end of this course, the successful candidate will be a certified WorkSafeBC Level 1 (OFA Level 1) First-Aid Attendant

FOODSAFE Certification

FOODSAFE is British Columbia’s standard for safe food handling. In cooperation with the BC Centre for Disease Control, BC Regional Health Authorities, and food service industry associations; FOODSAFE Level 1 ensures that employees in the food industry are properly trained and knowledgeable in food storage, handling, preparing, cleaning, and sanitizing. This level of certification is appropriate for front line food service workers including cooks, servers, bussers, dishwashers, and deli workers.

Job Coaching

Similar to a sports coach who helps athletes train for their sport, NYSA’s job coach helps our clients prepare for employment. Also known as job developers and career counselors,  our job coaches work for NYSA’s clients to provide them with one-on-one career guidance, job leads and ongoing support in the early days of employment.
