About the Role
This is a brand-new position where you will build NYSA’s volunteer program from the ground up. Rather than high-volume processing, this role is about relationship-based community building. You will focus on matching specific community talents — like artists, mechanics, or recreation facilitators — to the specific needs of our youth programs.
It’s a hands-on opportunity to design the systems, policies, and recognition practices that will shape how NYSA engages with the community for years to come.
What You’ll Do
- Build & Run Recruitment (40%): Develop targeted strategies to find skilled volunteers; manage the full cycle of interviewing, screening, and criminal record checks.
- Lead Onboarding & Engagement (25%): Ensure volunteers feel welcomed and trained; design meaningful recognition practices rooted in EDIJ principles.
- Support Staff & Reporting (20%): Advise program leads on volunteer alignment and track data such as hours, retention, and program impact.
- Develop Systems & Records (15%): Create the Volunteer Handbook and internal policies; set up and maintain a volunteer CRM or engagement platform.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience: You have 2+ years in volunteer coordination or community engagement within a nonprofit setting.
- Communication: You are comfortable having direct conversations, whether you are pitching a partnership or declining an applicant with care.
- Organization: You have the sound judgment and attention to detail needed to balance relationship work with administrative systems.
- Tech Savvy: You are proficient with Microsoft 365 and comfortable learning new nonprofit software or CRMs.
- Mission-Driven: You are eager to learn about the needs of young people in Nanaimo and can pass a vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check.
Education / Background
A combination of education, lived experience, and work in volunteer management or nonprofit settings.
